I just tell them I want cash only in an unmarked envelope and a statement that this is for your time and travel only. I always make sure when emailing to ask them what they are looking to experience specifically so that they have to initiaite and sort of sexual conversation.

Is there a smarter thing to go about this? I have been out of the circuit for about 3 years.

Wow! Thats really wierd that I happened to read this. A friend of mine in Nebraska just had the same exact thing happen to her recently, and she called and warned me about him. I guess he's went to a few other girls around the area trying the same thing. I wonder if it was the same guy. Luckily I haven't ran into him, but I would guess if he's not LE he's really wierd.
