From the National Gardening Association:

quote :
Many gardeners use sunscreen while outdoors to shield their skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. According to new research, eating tomatoes may also have a sun-protecting effect.

Researchers at the Universities of Newcastle and Manchester in England gave one-half of their study group 5 tablespoons of standard tomato paste with 10 grams of olive oil every day. The control group received just the olive oil. They exposed the groups to UV light at the beginning and end of the trial. After three months the researchers found the tomato paste group had 33 percent more protection against sunburn and significant improvements in their skin’s ability to protect itself against UV light when compared to the control group. The tomato paste boosted the procollagen levels in the group. Procollagen is a known antiaging factor in skin. Also, the lycopene (a known antioxidant) in tomatoes helped protect the cell’s mitochondria that, in turn, positively affected skin health.

Though I'm not fond of tomatoes it is nice for me to know that some of my southern friends are well protected from ultraviolet. I guess it is one more reason of why southerners mostly don't get sunburned.

There are ways to consume tomatoes other than in salads and sandwiches. One way is by eating pasta dishes with tomato sauce. Soups are another way. Anyone for salsa or sloppy Joes? And how about pizza? That and tomato ketchup are probably the least optimal ways, but would be better than avoiding all tomato products completely.

But since fresh tomatoes are the best for you, it might be worthwhile trying different varieties of tomatoes to see if some are better tasting to you. And you can also try growing your own tomatoes.

Great information daka1 and I love tomatoes myself! I learned to love eating fresh picked tomatoes as a child. I still love eating them even today. Only thing is now that tomatoes have been sited as having salmonella because of someone's mistake in handling them; there is a recall on them for now. I hate that because I was eating tomatoes less than a couple weeks before seeing on the news about the recall. I love eating tomatoes almost in any form.

Not all tomatoes hae been implicated in the salmonella outbreak. For example, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, as well as tomatoes grown at home are not linked to the outbreak and can be safely eaten. Of course, one should always rinse fresh produce before consuming it.

Here is a link to a fairly exhaustive report from the FDA on the subject:

As for me, I never came across tomatoes as carriers of salmonella. And I agree that the most good and safe tomatoes are homegrown ones. I used to eat them, they extremely diifer from those who were grown in a warmhouse. Or even on an open field.

Thanks daka1 and yes, I found out about that also just lately. My family had some tomatoes the other day that were cherry tomatoes and they were safe to eat. I am contemplating on growing my own tomatoes because I love vine ripe tomatoes. Those seem to taste the best. Both you and lonelitude are right about the vine ripe tomatoes too. I also always rinse off all fresh produce before eating it; it's much safer too.

What is a vine ripe tomato? Do you mean those that are all but overripe?

And as for rinsing: in fact it does matter only if you use boiling, extremely hot or just chemically modified in some way water.

Hi Letusdoit,
Vine Ripe tomatoes are not overripe. They basically have a color break or star-shaped spot that is lighter in color on the bottom of the vine ripe tomatoes. They are usually good for ripening at home and are very juicy and tasty. I remember my parents growing some vine ripe tomatoes when I was a child. I just loved the way the vine ripe tomatoes tasted and grew to really like them over a lot of other tomatoes. Oh, and yes I use really hot tap water to rinse off fresh produce; and a few times boiling water as well.
